Soke Dan Hausel

W. Dan Hausel (born 1949 in Salt Lake City Utah, USA). Grandmaster of Shorin-Ryu Karate & Kobudo (Seiyo Kai) and world head of Seiyo No Shorin-Ryu Karate Kobudo Kai (a.k.a. Seiyono Shorin-Ryu Budo-Bugei Renmei. Attended South High School in SLC and earned BS and MS degrees in geology at the University of Utah. Began martial arts training in 1964 at the Black Eagle Federation Kyokushin Kai dojo, and later attended the University of Utah Wado-Ryu dojo, University of Utah Shotokan dojo, University of New Mexico Shotokan dojo, and trained in Shorin-Ryu martial arts at the Juko Kai International Hombu from 1993 to present. Currently resides in Gilbert, Arizona.

 

In 1999, Soke Hausel developed a hybrid style of Okinawn Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo that was recognized by Zen Kokusai Soke Budo Bugei Renmei (an international governing organization of martial arts grandmasters) as a legitimate martial art and was awarded Soke Shodai (1st generation grandmaster) of this art. He is a member of more than a dozen Halls-of-Fame including the North American Black Belt Hall of Fame, the World Martial Arts Black Belt Hall of Fame and others. In 2004, he was awarded Judan (10th degree black belt) and is the only known martial artist to ever be awarded this rank in Wyoming. In 2012, he was awarded the unprecedented rank of 12th dan and presented the award of Meijin was Jujutsu, the only person in Arizona, Wyoming or Utah to ever reach this level in the martial arts.

 

In 2006, he left Wyoming for Gilbert, Arizona, where he and his wife reside.

Black Belt (Magazine), November, 1999 wrote: "W. Dan Hausel, Professor of Martial Arts at the University of Wyoming, was appointed Soke Shodai (grandmaster)/kudan (9th degree black belt) of Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate/Kobudo by the Zen Kokusai Soke Budo/Bugei Renmei commission at the Juko Kai International headquarters in North Carolina on September 26th, 1999. Soke Hausel was also recently honored in 1998 by induction into two hall of fames, honored as instructor of the year by two international associations",

 

While at the University of Wyoming, Hausel developed a traditional martial arts program at a university. In 1999, the UW Campus Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo Club was awarded the Juko Kai International Top-Rated Martial Arts School of the Year. In the following year, Hausel was awarded Juko-Kai International's Top-Rated Soke of the Year. The program provided martial arts (karate, kobudo, jujutsuself-defense and samurai arts) training for a few thousand students, faculty and staff from 1977 and continues to this day. Hausel began training in martial arts in the 1960s at the Black Eagle Federation Kyokushin Kaikan Dojo.[5]

 

He was awarded 2001 International Instructor of the Year, the 2004 Instructor of the Year, and the Grandmaster of the Year in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005. He continues to teach martial arts in Arizona at the Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo Hombu (Arizona School of Traditional Karate) in Mesa, Arizona

 

Martial Arts Grandmaster (Soke) Hausel celebrated 5 decades of martial arts in 2014. Prior to moving the Hombu dojo (world headquarters for Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate) to Mesa, Arizona, Soke was an instructor of martial artsat Gold's Gym, Arizona State University, the University of New Mexico and the University of Utah, and was Professor of Martial Arts at the University of Wyoming for 3 decades. Karate and other martial arts have been a very important part of his life.

 

Grandmaster Hausel is a polymath and recipient of national & international awards in geology, public speaking, art, mineral discoveries, exploration, education, teaching, martial arts & writing. He is a member of 17 Halls-of-Fame.

 

Grandmaster Hausel was warded "International Martial Arts Instructor of the Year", "Karate Instructor of the Year"; recipient of the Thayer Lindsley Award in Economic Geology, Archimedes Award in Geological Sciences, Wyoming Geological Association Distinguished Service Award, Education Award, President's Certificate, Laramie Lyceum Distinguished Speaker, Dept of Geology & Geophysics Distinguished Lecturer and appointed to the World Soke (Grandmaster) Council; International Council of Masters & Grandmasters & US Soke (Grandmaster) Council. Certified in as Sokeshodai of Seiyo No Shorin-Ryu Karate Kobudo Kai by Zen Kokusai Soke Budo Bugei Renmei, Grandmaster Hausel has also been presented several other national awards including:
